Coordinated assessment & mobile data collection workshop is a comprehensive training on needs assessment that was conducted in Mogadishu on 26-February-2017. It was a coordinated effort by the Banadir Education Cluster, particularly Somali Community Concern, SCC, and the Somali Coalition for Education for All, EFASOM. It was financially supported by the Global Campaign for Education under the CSEF Project (Civil Society Education Fund Project).The purpose of the training was to provide a broad overview of the assessment and analysis tools like the KoBo Toolbox, primary data collection, data analysis, and assessment coordination.This training is under the activity 2.3.1: Highlighting on educational challenges, part of Civil Society Education Fund Project 2017 Activities The specific objectives were: - to develop the skills of the education assessment stakeholders, - build the capacity of education cluster members in different organizations operating inside Mogadishu, and - broaden the understanding of humanitarian assessment among a wide range of participating education stakeholders. The education cluster member organizations and the government attended the training. There were 25 participants from 17 different organizations include: RAWDO, SHARDO, Concern WW, SCC, Aid Vision, USTAAD, SOCWE, OSPAD, KAASHIF, EFASOM, FENPS, FARDO, SSYDO, PAH, NRC, CISP, and the Ministry of Education. The training was facilitated by Mohamed Moallim Osman known as Moallimu, an experienced program officer working with the Somali Community Concern, SCC.

Presentations were supported by practical exercises, in which the participants were able to draw on their own experiences and expertise, and practice using tools and technology such as smartphone surveys for data collection. Many participants had taken part in the Education Sector Needs Assessment in 2016 and could share their views on the challenges of implementing such a coordinated assessment, where humanitarian access was limited.

The participants practiced how use the KoBo Toolbox which is a suite of tools for field data collection for use in challenging environments. It is intended for people working in humanitarian crises, as well as aid worker professionals and researchers working in developing countries like Somalia. It is quickly collecting reliable information in a humanitarian crisis. Understanding the population’s needs is often neglected for lack of quick means to gather and analyze crucial information.

KoBo Toolbox, developed by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, is an open source suite of tools for data collection and analysis in humanitarian emergencies and other challenging environments that was built to address this gap.
